You Snobbish You

"The Parisian Life" (1892) painting by Juan Luna |
It does not matter where we meet again
Or how or when: I entertain no fear,
Though I have sighed my sighs for you in vain,
That I may never get to make you care.
No lapse of time, no rudeness on your part-
As when you look at me with sharp disdain,
Or turn your back with such decided art-
Can change my mind or move it to complain.
Yet, not for once do I suppose, my pet,
That in some way at last you would relent.
You are so young, so sure of things, I bet:
Assured of greater loves to come, content-
And even if I had tail to wag,
You would not change, not till you were a hag.
